Docs grows into a full word processor in this release: headers, footers and page numbers, watermarks, templates, one-step emailing and sharing, and Word, Markdown and text files that open straight into Docs. The video editor can now edit a video by editing its transcript, make videos from your photos, burn styled captions into a video, and preview transitions live. Recordings also survive a screen capture that drops out mid-recording.

Email and share documents

  • Export → Email this file or Share this file sends a document as PDF, Word, web page, Markdown or text without saving it anywhere first.
  • Outlook and Thunderbird open a new email with the file already attached. Gmail, Outlook.com and Yahoo Mail open with the recipients, subject and message filled in, and the file ready to drag in or paste.
  • Share with an app opens the Windows share window (Nearby Share, WhatsApp, Teams, OneDrive and more). There are also one-click WhatsApp, Telegram, Teams, Slack and Discord, Copy file, and Copy contents to paste the document, formatting and all, into an email or chat.

Headers, footers and page numbers

  • Headers and footers now show on every page as you write, exactly where they print. Double-click a page's top or bottom margin to edit them.
  • Left, centre and right text, with page number, page count, title and date fields.
  • Page numbers in six positions and five wordings ("Page 1 of 9", "– 1 –"…), in 1 2 3, i ii iii, I II III, a b c or A B C, starting from any number.
  • Different first page for a title page. Everything prints, goes into PDFs, and becomes real Word headers and footers with live page numbers.

Watermarks

  • More → Watermark puts DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL or your own words (diagonal or horizontal, any colour and size), or a logo or seal, faintly behind the text of every page.
  • Optionally leave it off the cover page. It prints, and goes into PDF and Word exports.

Templates and page setup

  • Start a new document from 13 templates: research paper, two-column journal letter, thesis, lab notebook, literature review, lecture notes, business report, meeting notes, project proposal, weekly update, invoice, resume/CV and cover letter.
  • Page setup adds landscape pages and page colour, which now covers the whole sheet in print and PDF.

Papers: equations, columns, captions, citations and contents

  • LaTeX equations, inline or displayed and numbered (1), (2)…, that export as real Word equations.
  • Two-column layout and Document style, with ready-made styles (APS/RevTeX, IEEE, LaTeX article…), plus a library of bundled fonts (Latin Modern, STIX Two, Libertinus and more) so documents look the same on every computer. The ? button walks you through writing a two-column paper.
  • Numbered figure and table captions, and cross-references that always show the current number.
  • Citations and a reference list in Nature, APS, IEEE or APA style, from a DOI, arXiv ID or BibTeX.
  • A table of contents and a document outline panel.
  • Import PDF rebuilds a paper as an editable document, or keeps its pages exactly as printed.

Open Word, Markdown and text files in Docs

  • .docx, .md and .txt files now open in Docs from anywhere: Open a file, the library or Import. The original file is never changed.
  • Opening the same file again takes you back to your document, unless the file has changed since.

Edit video by editing its transcript

  • Edit by transcript shows everything said in a video as text. Delete words and they're cut from the video; the speech joins up naturally.
  • One click removes filler words ("um", "uh"), stutters and long pauses. Hover first to see exactly what goes, and how much time each saves.
  • Transcription runs offline on your computer. Words are now timed against the actual speech, so every cut lands where the word really is.

Make videos from images

  • Create video from images on the Video Editor screen turns photos into a video: pick them from your library or your computer, choose a 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:3 frame and how long each image shows, and add slow zoom-and-pan movement and crossfades in one go. Or start with a blank timeline.
  • Every editor tool works on photos: transitions, color, crop, text, music, captions. Mixed sizes and orientations are fitted into the frame without stretching, iPhone HEIC photos are supported, and phone photos always appear the right way up.
  • Projects are kept in your library to reopen and keep editing. Save makes a normal .mp4.
  • Images can also be added to any recording's timeline. Click the new + after the last clip, or drop several files at once.

Burned-in captions

  • Captions in the video editor writes captions from the speech, offline and on your computer, and burns them into the exported video, so they show anywhere it's played.
  • 15 caption styles, from a clean subtitle to word-by-word highlights, with position, size, words per line, word emphasis and ALL CAPS.
  • Fix any line by editing its text, and copy or download them all as a transcript. Captions follow your cuts and reordering.
  • The player's own captions can now be styled the same way, and caption generation picks up where it stopped if Briefcast is closed mid-way.

Color grading

  • Effects → Color grading: exposure, contrast, saturation, temperature, tint, highlights and shadows, with a live RGB histogram and hold-to-compare.
  • Import .cube LUTs, such as camera log conversions, film looks or grades from other apps, with an amount slider.
  • The preview is exactly the export: both apply the same color table, now drawn on the GPU while you edit.

Video editor

  • Transitions now play live in the preview, exactly as they'll export. Each one is labelled under its cut on the timeline.
  • Transitions no longer shorten the video. They play over the start of the next clip, so text, images and captions stay where you put them in the export.
  • Right-click a clip for a menu: view it on its own, save just that clip, split, duplicate, move, and set its transition, motion, color and length.
  • Speed ramps: slow-mo moments, speed-ups and slow-downs across a clip, playing live and exporting to the exact length.
  • Freeze frame and Reverse (every frame kept) in the clip menu, and Stabilize to remove camera shake.
  • Motion keyframes for text and images: move, scale and fade them over time, with smooth, eased or held moves.
  • Cut to the beat: find the tempo and beats of a music track, snap to them, and time a slideshow's images to the beat.
  • Export for any platform: 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5, fitted with a blurred background or bars, or filled. Follow the subject moves the crop with the action, like a camera operator, and the player shows the kept area before you export.
  • Loudness targets: -14 LUFS for streaming or -16 LUFS for podcasts, hit within 0.1 LU with peaks kept below -2 dBFS.
  • Crop, Ken Burns and mirror now preview exactly as they export, including clips of a different shape. Splitting a clip keeps all of its settings, and a speed ramp or Ken Burns move carries on across the pieces.

Home screen

  • From your library now lists documents, whiteboards and mind maps alongside your recordings, most recent first.

Also new

  • If the window reloads, for example after waking the laptop from sleep, Briefcast reopens what you were working on instead of the home screen.
  • Settings → Appearance → Show status bar hides the bottom row (date and time, memory use, feedback link).
  • Phone photo thumbnails in the library now appear the right way up.

Recording

  • If the screen capture stops mid-recording (a display change, a UAC prompt, a driver reset), Briefcast restarts it within a second or two while the audio carries on. The recording bar shows reconnecting and then recovered, and the finished recording is complete.

See the Docs guide and the Video editor guide for the details.
